What is PIP?

When it comes to car accidents in Fort Lauderdale, you may hear the word “PIP” thrown around a lot between adjusters, attorneys, and insurance companies.

PIP stands for personal injury protection and depending on the state, can cover medical expenses, future lost income, essential services, and possible funeral expenses.

However, PIP has a limit it can cover and is not unlimited. This means that there is a maximum amount that is pre-determined when you sign up with your insurance company. This PIP limit depends on the state, but most states cover up to 10,000 dollars in damages.

Why is PIP Useful?

PIP is something known as primary coverage.

So before your medical insurance can even kick in, PIP helps you pay for whatever that is within the limit and nothing will come out of your pocket until the PIP limit is reached.

So if your deductible or medical expenses from the gate are high, PIP can cover you and help you pay for the medical expenses.

What is NOT Covered Under PIP?

Although PIP can be a lifesaver sometimes and really help you pay for medical expenses that would normally be extremely taxing to pay out of pocket, there are certain things that PIP doesn’t pay for:

  • Damage to your vehicle
    • PIP does not cover damage to your car, but collision coverage does.
  • Theft of your vehicle
    • PIP does not cover an entire stolen car, but comprehensive coverage WILL cover a stolen vehicle.
  • Damage to another person’s car
    • If you are found to be responsible for the accident, PIP will not cover the damage to another person’s car. Property damage liability coverage will be the policy that covers damage to another person’s vehicle or property.
  • Damage that exceeds the coverage limit.
    • PIP will not cover damages that exceed the limit. However, if your damages do exceed the PIP limit, then you may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against the other driver.
