6 Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury
6 Signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury
Before I list out the signs, I just want to say that this is not professional medical advice. But just my experience as a personal injury lawyer and dealing with numerous cases has put me in the position to suggest the signs.
Loss of Consciousness or Haziness
Basically, this is when there is an interruption in awareness and surroundings.
What? It’s also known as fainting.
Easier to understand right?
But it doesn’t always have to be full loss of consciousness, it can even just be haziness, confusion, or disorientation.
If you are fainting or getting hazy in your head within hours or days of a huge hit to the head or impact, then it is possible that you may have traumatic brain injury.
Headaches
Mild to severe headaches are a sign that you may have a traumatic brain injury.
If you never experienced any kind of headache before and suddenly start to feel them, then you may have traumatic brain injury.
Don’t panic suddenly and jump to conclusions just because of this.
Like I said before, I am not a medical professional and what I say should only be taken as a light suggestion.
If you regularly experience headaches for whatever reason and this is no different, then maybe it’s not that big of a deal. I am only saying if you are experiencing headaches out of the ordinary you should be a little concerned.
Nausea and Vomiting
A hazy and sick feeling that feels sick enough to vomit is nausea.
Where your head is spinning and there’s a queasy feeling in your stomach.
So close to vomiting.
Or maybe you do.
That is nausea.
If you feel that sensation and it’s regularly coming to you, then you might have suffered a traumatic brain injury.
However, I am not the doctor and after reading this, you should go see a doctor and get a real diagnosis.
Irregular Sleep Patterns
Sleep is the time your brain gets to rest without any visual or physical stimulus.
Not getting enough sleep can negatively affect your lifestyle.
Sleeping too much or having trouble waking up are telling signs that your brain might be suffering from trauma of a big blow or impact.
Having trouble falling asleep can also be a sign that you are suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
Why is a change in sleep such a telling sign? Because your brain cannot rest.
The impact or blow has affected you so much that it has impaired your sleeping. Unless you have never been able to sleep (and it had nothing to do with the brain injury), this might be another big sign that you are suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
Loss of Coordination
The brain also controls the way that you move and react to your surroundings.
Maybe you workout, and suddenly the workout becomes harder to do.
It is possible that you used to play a sport and now the movements are harder to do and you find it harder to react to other people.
You might even miss something as easy as a handshake with a friend or a hug from your loved one.
When your movement is being compromised and you feel like you are being limited by something invisible, it might be the trauma from the traumatic brain injury.
This might be the time to see your doctor urgently. Getting a real diagnosis from a professional might be the best idea at the moment.
Slurred Speech
Similar to loss of coordination, slurred speech is the audio version.
Obviously your brain controls the way you speak, and if your brain is traumatized and unable to work as it should, then your speech might be affected.
You might not be able to say certain words properly, your speech might be very slurred and messy.
You might be thinking one thing and saying something completely different.
If it goes as far as your friends telling you that you sound “drunk”, then it might be time for you to go to the doctor and get a diagnosis.
What Do I Do After a Traumatic Brain Injury?
The first thing to do is go to a doctor. If you feel any of these symptoms, then going to a doctor is a must.
Even if you don’t have traumatic brain injury in the end, it doesn’t hurt to get a diagnosis and make sure that you have something concrete.
Keep in mind though, if your brain damage was caused by the impact of someone else’s negligence, then you may be entitled to financial compensation.
Something like texting and driving, falling asleep on the road, or not looking at the road and causing the accident are all signs of negligent driving.
If you were paying attention, but you believe that the other driver might have been doing any of these things and caused the accident, you need to call a personal injury lawyer.
